## The Harder Problem Than Expected

City streets are chaotic. Pedestrians jaywalk, cyclists weave between lanes, construction zones appear overnight, and weather conditions change every hour. Human drivers handle ambiguity through intuition and years of pattern recognition. Replicating that in software has proven far harder than early predictions.

## Where AI Excels

Highways are structured environments with clear lanes, signals, and speed limits. Autonomous systems already excel there. Long-haul trucking on highways is likely to be the first fully autonomous commercial success.

## Safety Record

Well-designed autonomous systems are already safer than human drivers on highways. Human error causes 94% of crashes. The challenge is edge cases — the rare, unpredictable events that still cause autonomous vehicles to hand control back to humans.

## The Timeline

Fully autonomous urban taxis everywhere by 2030 is unlikely. Expect gradual rollout: geofenced city zones first, then expansion. Personal autonomous vehicles for consumers remain further out due to cost and liability questions.

Self-driving isn’t here yet, but it’s closer than the headlines suggest — one carefully mapped neighborhood at a time.
